INITIAL ASSESSMENT OF FLOATING SOLAR POWER

Description
Long limited to pilot projects of just a few megawatts, floating solar entered a new phase in 2025–2026 with the commissioning of the first large-scale plants in France, installed on hydroelectric reservoirs, former quarries, or industrial ponds. What about offshore floating solar?
This growth is accompanied by ongoing innovations in floats and mooring systems, aimed at reducing costs and simplifying deployment logistics. But beyond the technical and industrial feats, what insights have emerged regarding actual operating and maintenance costs, local acceptance of these projects, and impacts on aquatic ecosystems?
This session will revolve around a central question: Is floating solar a sector poised for long-term scaling up, or will it remain a solution limited to a few very specific cases?
