France’s energy transition is entering a new phase. With its plan to electrify end-use sectors, the government aims to drastically reduce fossil fuel consumption in buildings, transportation, and industry. The 100 selected “electrification regions” will even be required to pilot an accelerated phase-out of natural gas in favor of electricity.
In this new landscape, what role remains for biogas? As France continues to set ambitious biomethane production targets and anaerobic digestion projects multiply, must the sector demonstrate that it meets needs that electrification cannot cover: industry, heavy-duty transportation, waste-to-energy, agriculture, and security of supply?
Is biogas destined to become a supplementary energy source, reserved for uses that are most difficult to electrify? Can it remain a driver of economic and agricultural development in local regions? How can we reconcile the ambitions of electrification with those of developing renewable gases?
