The expansion of renewable energy is accompanied by growing demands for environmental monitoring. Bird surveys, bat monitoring, analysis of natural habitats, and assessment of the effectiveness of impact mitigation measures: the volume of data collected at wind and solar farms continues to grow.
Artificial intelligence is increasingly being used to process this data: automated analysis of images or acoustic data, processing of data streams from sensors, drones, or satellites, and detection of species or anomalies. The question remains: what do these tools actually offer to ecological monitoring professionals, and what are their current limitations?
Is AI mature enough to transform ecological monitoring practices, or does it still serve only as an occasional supplement to on-the-ground expertise? How, in practical terms, does the work between ecologists and digital tools come together?
