Regions are no longer merely energy consumers, they are becoming producers. Solar, wind, anaerobic digestion, district heating networks… the ability to produce local, carbon-free, and competitive energy is emerging as a key factor in business location decisions, against a backdrop of reindustrialization, the electrification of energy use, and the pursuit of energy sovereignty.
Producing renewable energy locally generates tax revenue, creates jobs that cannot be outsourced, and strengthens a region’s energy resilience. More and more local governments are using this production capacity as a selling point to attract both businesses and residents.
This roundtable examines the conditions for this transformation: How does a region turn its energy production capacity into a real and measurable economic advantage? What models of governance and cooperation among local governments, producers, and manufacturers enable this value to be captured locally, rather than elsewhere?
It will bring together concrete case studies to identify the strategies that are already working on the ground and the partnerships that need to be built to transform local production into a driver of regional economic development.
