Artificial intelligence and digital solutions are emerging as essential drivers of renewable energy development. They help optimize solar and wind power generation, enable proactive maintenance, and enhance the performance of power plants. They also facilitate the integration of renewable energy into the grid by helping to balance supply and demand, manage congestion, and leverage flexibility. Finally, they transform data into a strategic asset, where data quality, sharing, security, and sovereignty become essential conditions for building a more efficient, resilient, and intelligent energy system. This roundtable will focus on the practical applications of these new digital solutions and the conditions for their large-scale deployment to sustainably support the development of renewable energy. How can data be leveraged to drive performance in the renewable energy sector? How does AI improve the production and operation of renewable energy? Finally, we will ask them if they are also working to reduce the environmental footprint of AI, particularly by developing and promoting more energy-efficient solutions. A roundtable discussion moderated by Aude Richard, journalist

BUILDING THE ENERGY SYSTEM: WHAT NEW CHALLENGES FOR SKILLS ?

Electrification of end-use applications, grid reinforcement, deployment of renewable energy, growth in energy storage, and digitization of infrastructure… The energy transition is profoundly transforming the professions and skill requirements across the entire sector. These needs span not only electrical engineering but also installation, connection, operation, and maintenance. Initial training programs struggle to cover the specifics of the latest renewable technologies (photovoltaic repowering, energy storage, digital control of installations, etc.), which is prompting operators to take on part of their teams’ training in-house, through company-specific certification programs rather than traditional academic curricula. Apprenticeships and professional retraining are widely utilized, but often on an ad hoc basis, company by company, without any real sector-wide coordination. This roundtable will examine whether these ad hoc responses (in-house training, work-study programs, retraining) will be sufficient to bridge the gap, or whether the sector must scale up and adopt more structured collective initiatives. What role can vocational high schools, training centers, and local communities play in ensuring a long-term supply of the skills required by the energy transition? And how can the pace of training be adapted to keep up with the much faster pace of technological change itself? This roundtable will also highlight an issue that is often less visible than technological or financial concerns, but just as critical: the sector’s ability to train, attract, and retain the talent needed to build, operate, and maintain the energy system of the future.
