HOW CAN WE ACCELERATE THE ELECTRIFICATION OF END-USE APPLICATIONS?
The new energy system will not be built solely by producing more renewable electricity; it requires a profound transformation of our consumption patterns. The expansion of solar and wind power leads to periods of high production—sometimes exceeding demand—resulting in episodes of negative prices on the market. The challenge now is to develop applications capable of making effective use of this low-carbon electricity. Heat pumps, electric vehicles, thermodynamic water heaters, industrial processes, and hydrogen: the electrification of end-use applications is one of the main drivers not only of decarbonization but also of balancing the electricity system. It must be accompanied by new ways of managing consumption, greater flexibility in end-use applications, and grid adaptations. What barriers still need to be overcome to scale up this transition? What economic and regulatory signals will help accelerate investment? How can we coordinate electricity generators, grid operators, manufacturers, utilities, and consumers to create a more flexible, resilient, and efficient energy system? This roundtable will demonstrate that electrification is one of the pillars of the new energy system—the one that will enable abundant renewable generation to align with uses capable of consuming it at the right time. RENEWABLE HYDROGEN AT ITS LOWEST POINT… BEFORE A REBOUND?
After the initial euphoria surrounding the announcements, it’s time to face reality. Several projects have been postponed or scrapped, production costs remain high, infrastructure deployment is lagging, and industrial demand is struggling to materialize. Renewable hydrogen is going through a consolidation phase that calls into question its timeline, but not necessarily its role in decarbonization. So, is this just a temporary slump, or an essential step toward a more robust sector? Which applications should be prioritized: industry, heavy-duty transportation, e-fuels, or renewable energy storage? What business models will finally enable a viable market to emerge? This story is likely not one of failure, but rather of a change in direction. Hydrogen now seems to be finding its true purpose where alternatives are limited: the decarbonization of heavy industry, the steel industry, the chemical industry, and synthetic fuels. At the same time, major European infrastructure projects are beginning to take shape, with transportation initiatives that will eventually make it possible to produce hydrogen where it is most cost-effective and transport it to major industrial hubs. One key question remains: how can these prospects be turned into industrial reality? What are the main obstacles today? Will France—which has numerous industrial strengths and ranks among the most dynamic countries in e-fuel projects—be able to convert this lead into investments and factories? Europe’s dependence on Chinese photovoltaic modules has become a strategic blind spot in the energy transition. As industrial sovereignty returns to the forefront of public policy, a few projects are emerging in France and across Europe to rebuild a solar value chain—from materials to module manufacturing, through installation, maintenance, and recycling. But at what cost, and with what economic viability? The cancellation of an initial industrial project in France underscores the difficulty of establishing a competitive solar industry in a market dominated by Asia. At the same time, the recycling of first-generation panels opens up another prospect: that of a circular economy still in its infancy, but poised to scale up significantly with the gradual arrival of millions of end-of-life panels. HEAT NETWORKS TO SCALE UP DECARBONIZATION IN HOUSING
District heating networks powered by renewable and recovered energy are among the most powerful tools for rapidly decarbonizing the building sector. Nordic models have demonstrated this for several decades: when well-planned, supported, and connected on a large scale, these networks enable a massive shift away from fossil fuels. In France, the potential remains considerable but is still underutilized. The Multi-Year Energy Plan (PPE3) sets an ambitious goal: to triple the number of district heating networks. This requires a genuine shift in scale: accelerating projects, securing business models, mobilizing local governments, connecting more multi-unit housing, and making better use of local resources. This roundtable will compare European experiences with French realities to identify persistent barriers to deployment: financing, public acceptance, regional engineering, building connections, availability of renewable heat, and local governance. Above all, it will examine the conditions needed to make district heating networks a central tool for the widespread decarbonization of housing.
